Well-being

An introduction to Well-being

Well-being is the term used to describe an overall state of health, happiness and comfort in life.

Well-being is also often referred to as wellness & the two have various forms of spelling, all meaning the same general notion

Well-being includes more than just health & happiness, a number of factors can also have an impact.

Some other factors include sense of purpose, sense of control, fulfillment of goals etc.

Well-being is subjective - it means different things to different people but it generally has a similar overall theme.

This may be partially due to the lack of a clear definition, however it is likely also due to individual differences in every one of our lives.

We all have different personalities, lifestyles, passions, hobbies, aspirations & ambitions. We all like different things, & want different things in life, so there is no exact formula/recipe for a perfect well-being as everyone one of us is unique so is our well-being.

We can break well-being down into a number of dimensions to make it easier to understand the level of involvemnet, therefore exploring how we can make improvements in our well-being by making slight adjustments or achieving a balance.

Emotional/Psychological well-being - our mental health, resilience, coping abilities and how we feel about ourselves

Physical well-being - our lifestyle choices & how we look after our bodies including our diet & exercise

Social well-being - our relationships, communication, sense of belonging & inclusion in social situations, within our friendship groups & families etc. Our values, beliefs & traditions also com into play within our social well-being

Intellectual well-being - our knowledge & skills which help our successes in life

Spiritual well-being - our perception of the meaning and purpose in life - our connection with nature, a greater/higher power or even just our inner selves

Economic well-being - our sense of security in our ability to provide our basic economic needs

As there are so many dimensions that contribute to well-being - it can appear pretty complicated to know how and where to start making improvements.

Often referred to as the 5 ways to well-being

Connect – talk and listen to others and always live in the moment.
Be active – do what you can and enjoy what you do.
Take notice – remember the simple things that give you joy.
Keep learning – embrace new experiences and seek new opportunities.
